How to Install Insulation on Your Garage Door Using A BlueTex® Garage Door Insulation Kit

An uninsulated garage door is one of the biggest sources of heat gain and heat loss in a home, and it's one of the easiest to fix. The BlueTex™ Residential Garage Door Insulation Kit is designed for panel-style sectional doors (the kind that roll up on tracks in individual sections), and the whole job can be completed in an afternoon with no special skills required.

What's in the kit?

Each kit includes 22"-wide rolls of BlueTex™ 2mm Pro foil insulation, double-sided tape for bonding the insulation to each panel, white seam tape for finishing the edges, and optional screws and washers if you prefer a mechanical fastener over adhesive alone. Kits are sized for either 4-panel or 5-panel doors depending on your specific door configuration - check measurements!

Getting started

Keep the door closed throughout the early stages of the install. Begin by wiping down each panel, a damp rag to remove dust and grime is all you need. Then apply the double-sided tape along the horizontal seam between each row of panels, as well as vertically on the side edges. Leave the paper liner in place for now; you'll peel it back section by section as you go.

Installing panel by panel

Cut your first piece of BlueTex™ 2–3 inches wider than the door. Open the door slightly, just enough to expose the seam at the bottom, then press the top edge of the insulation firmly against the exposed tape. Once the top edge is anchored, peel the liner from the bottom tape strip and press the lower edge down, trimming any excess flush with the door bottom. Repeat this process upward, row by row, until the entire door surface is covered. Overlapping between rows is fine and will be cleaned up in the finishing step.

One critical rule: once double-sided tape is applied, do not fully open the door. Opening it prematurely will cause the tape to grab unintended surfaces and create a frustrating mess.

Finishing up

Once all panels are covered, use a sharp knife to slice through both layers of insulation along each hinge line across the full width of the door. This frees each panel to flex independently as the door opens. Then work your way through the door panel by panel, opening it to a comfortable working height, and apply white seam tape around all four edges of each panel. Half the tape sits on the insulation, the other half on the metal door frame. The result is a clean, professional-looking finish that locks the garage door insulation securely in place.

Doors with high-wind horizontal bracing can still be insulated: simply remove one brace at a time, install the BlueTex™ behind it, then reinstall the brace before moving to the next one.

Frequently Asked Questions:

The BlueTex™ Residential Kit is made for panel-style sectional doors, the kind with individual horizontal sections that bend and roll up on tracks. Each section must be no taller than 21 inches from center to center. It is not intended for single-sheet roll-up commercial doors (a separate kit exists for those).
Count the horizontal rows of panels on your door. Most standard residential garage doors have either 4 or 5 rows. The kit you order is matched to your panel count (the total length of material needed to cover the panels can also help you determine which kit to buy), though the installation process is identical for both.
This is a straightforward DIY project. No special tools or skills are required beyond a utility knife, the included tapes, and a bit of patience. Having a second person helps when aligning and pressing down the insulation strips.
The double-sided tape is extremely aggressive once the liner is removed. Opening the door before the insulation is fully installed and the hinges are cut can cause the tape to bond to unintended surfaces, making repositioning very difficult.
For best results, tape all four edges of each individual panel, top, bottom, and both sides, using the included white seam tape. This secures the garage door insulation firmly, prevents peeling, and gives the finished job a clean look.
You can still complete the installation. Work one brace at a time: remove the brace by unscrewing it from the door, install the BlueTex™, then reattach the brace securely before moving to the next one. Customers in high-wind regions have used this method successfully.
Yes. The kit includes optional screws and locking insulation washers for anyone who prefers a mechanical attachment. This can be a good backup option on older doors or for customers who want a permanent hold. This will create holes in your metal door though, so it may not be a good idea for everyone.
No, as long as you slice through the insulation along each hinge line during the finishing step. This is a critical part of the process, it allows each panel to pivot freely when the door rolls up and down.
An uninsulated metal garage door conducts heat and cold extremely efficiently, making it one of the highest-impact upgrades you can make. Adding BlueTex™ garage door insulation blocks both radiant heat and provides a layer of thermal resistance, which can meaningfully reduce temperature swings, especially in garages used as workshops or connected to living spaces. Exactly how much it changes depends on several factors, including the outside temperature and the ventilation.
The key measurement is that each panel row must be no taller than 21 inches from hinge center to hinge center. The 22"-wide BlueTex™ rolls are sized to fit within this dimension with a small allowance for trimming and overlap. If your panels are taller, contact us before ordering to discuss the best approach.
