First, open a window inside the home 2-4" that is close to a return vent. This will provide "make up" air since your home will be under negative pressure when blowing cold air inside the attic during radiant barrier installation. This will prevent "backdrafting" or pulling in air from your hot water heater vent, or chimney into the living space.
Second, find a nice long duct (15-30ft) that once disconnected can be moved around and cover a large part of the attic. Any size duct will do, but a 6" to 10" duct is ideal. Next, use a wire cutter or heavyweight scissors to cut both the outside and inside panduit straps. These are the Giant Zip Ties that hold your ducts to the boots in the ceiling. Replacement straps can be purchased from most home improvement stores
Carefully remove the duct and use to blow cold air in the area you are working. Move the duct as you move. Turn the fan switch on your thermostat to "ON". This will cause the fan to blow air continuously.
If you must continue the next day, just slide the duct back on the boot and don't worry about fastening it. When the radiant barrier foil installation is complete, re-attach the ducts to the boots. Use some duct sealant or caulk to seal the duct to the boot.
Carefully pull the INNER lining of the duct over the boot. Make sure you pull it down a couple of inches. Then, attach a panduit strap and tighten with a pair of pliers. Trim off excess strap.
Pull the insulation down and then the OUTER lining. Attach a second panduit strap and pull tight to seal. You are DONE - Enjoy the comfort and efficiency of your radiant barrier home.
